The World Bank Group reports that doing business remains easiest in the high-income economies of the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development and most difficult in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia. But developing economies are increasingly active.

 

Governance in Africa

■ Ibrahim Index of African Governance, 2010 Edition (external link)
This index measures the delivery of public goods and services to citizens by government and nonstate actors. In the 2010 edition, South Africa ranked 5th out of 53 African countries using indicators across four main categories: Safety and Rule of Law; Participation and Human Rights; Sustainable Economic Opportunity; and Human Development as proxies for the quality of the processes and outcomes of governance.
